High costs, flat funding strain school districts’ budgets

Posted by Texas Education on July 2, 2008

LAURIE FOX of The Dallas Morning News reports on the Texas ISD school districts’ budgets. More on Rep. Branch and also a quote from Peggy Venable, the Texas director of the conservative taxpayer group Americans for Prosperity. This is just amazing, “This is where we need to be. School districts need to be appropriately cautious with their money,” said Peggy Venable, “This is all a shell game to simply get as much money as they can from the Legislature and taxpayers.” Is she for real???? This is where we need to be? Cutting programs across the state? closing of schools, staff reductions? millions in cuts? And, of course, the list goes on and on.

Ok, this is the part where we need to stand up and take notice:

The political fight to determine just how much money school districts need, who should decide how much they need and where the money should come from probably won’t be settled when the Texas Legislature reconvenes in January.

Rep. Dan Branch, R-Dallas, chairman of a special House committee on school finance, said some of the school districts’ concerns will be addressed.

Which ones? Ones we can live with? Probably not. We certainly can not stand by for this. Contact your legislature representative, contact those wanting their positions. Ask them, confront them. We need answers, and we need them NOW.
