For dropouts, opportunity knocks next weekend

Posted by Texas Education on September 3, 2008

This from the Baytown Sun. You go Goose Creek!!!

In the three months between the final school bell and the first day back to school, about 200 Goose Creek CISD students made the decision not to return to classes.

But Goose Creek employees and community volunteers are not just going to sit by and let these kids fall through the cracks. Next Sept. 6, they’ll be knocking on doors with the mission of getting students who have yet to graduate back where they belong — in school.

The Reach Out to Dropouts Walk 2008 has never been done in Goose Creek. But after the Houston-area school districts’ success with the program, Goose Creek employees are willing to give it a try.

The walk started with a collaborative effort between the Houston Independent School District, Mayor Bill White’s office and Houston A+ Challenge.

Volunteers will need to show up at Ross S. Sterling High School, 300 W. Baker Road on Sept. 6. The walk starts at 8 a.m. with registration and a continental breakfast. Volunteer training will follow at 8:30 a.m. Volunteers will participate in Reach Out to Dropouts Walk from 9 a.m. until noon and return the materials they were given to Sterling between noon and 12:30 p.m.

Anyone interested in volunteering for the Reach Out to Dropouts Walk 2008 can find out more about it at http://www.gccisd.net or contact Alexander at 281-420-3082 or jdalexander(at)gccisd.net.
